Isabel Mendes Blake was a vigilant advocate for equity in education. She actively engaged members of her community and lawmakers to ensure children of color had a quality education. Mrs. Blake encouraged parents from the Northend of Hartford to become civically involved to support the changes they wanted to see. This Civic Engagement Scholarship was established to continue Mrs. Blake’s legacy of education, community service, entrepreneurship, and empowerment through scholarship to youth from Greater Hartford communities. 

 

The Isabel Mendes Blake Civic Engagement Award is a one-time monetary scholarship awarded to a graduating high school senior from a school in Greater Hartford. Recipients of the award must demonstrate excellence in academics, exhibit leadership skills, and actively contribute to their community.

 

General Application

Selection Criteria- Application Closed until next year

• Graduating high school seniors

• Student attending a high school in Greater Hartford

• GPA of 2.5 or higher

• Student of color

• Entering a two-or four year college/university or post-secondary education

• Extent of community involvement/service

• Leadership skills

• Additional legacy scholarship for a descendant of Isabel Mendes Blake will be made available if funding permits

This fund was established in honor of Isabel Mendes Blake, a community activist in the city of Hartford, who stressed the importance of education and inspired others to dream big.
